Royal Roads University is a former naval military college that became British Columbia's first private university in 1995 when it was converted to a civilian institution. The university's main building, Hatley Castle, is part of a National Historic Site and is best known as the exterior filming locations in the X-Men films (as Professor X's school for mutants) and Smallville television series (as the Luthor Mansion).

Hatley Castle is a National Historic Site located on the campus of Royal Roads University that was the home of former British Columbia Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir. It was also planned as the royal residence for King George VI and his family during the Second World War before such relocation plans were canceled. It was subsequently converted to a naval training facility for Royal Roads, which was then a military college. Today, it is known as the exterior filming location in the X-Men movies (as Professor X's school for mutants) and the Smallville television series (as the Luthor Mansion).
